All About Removable Dentures

All About Removable Dentures

Tooth loss affects our facial contour and self-esteem regardless of if it’s full or partial. If tooth loss is left untreated, it can lead to severe health problems like malnutrition as they interfere in a person’s eating habits. Dentistry, fortunately, has a solution to this. Full or partial dentures are a long-term and very reliable method that could treat this condition.
Other than the dentures, missing teeth can be replaced by bridge framework and dental implants. All the options have their benefits and disadvantages. Even the dentures are of different varieties and depend upon the individual’s condition.

WHAT IS A REMOVABLE DENTURE?

A removable denture is a removable replacement of a missing tooth or teeth along with the surrounding tissues. They are also sometimes referred to as false teeth or plates. Removable dentures cannot just replace the missing teeth but also fill out the contours of the lips and face which tend to shrink inwards after the loss of multiple teeth. There are two types of removable dentures.
All About Removable Dentures

  • Complete Dentures: Complete dentures are either conventionally made or are immediate. They are used in cases where all the teeth are missing. Once all the teeth have been removed, the gums are allowed to heal. After about eight to twelve weeks of healing your dentist will provide you with a conventional denture. They are provided during the healing period so you can talk and eat with ease. The gums tend to shrink after the removal of the teeth and during the healing period which causes problems with the fitting of the immediate dentures.
  • Partial Dentures: A removable partial denture is a pink or gum-colored base that is attached to replacement teeth. The denture is made according to the need of an individual. The primary components of the denture include an acrylic base which is usually made to match the patient’s natural gum color, a metal framework along with clasps that connect the denture to your teeth. In some dentures, a more esthetic option is used instead of clasps called precision attachments. Your dentist can help you decide which denture is ideal for you. They are used in cases where one or more than one teeth have to be replaced.
The artificial teeth are attached to either side of the space by placing the crowns on the adjacent teeth. It is followed by cementing a bridge on the place. The partial denture packs the space created by a missing tooth or teeth entirely and prevents the adjacent teeth from changing their position.

WHAT TO EXPECT In A Denture?

Dentures come with a challenge of being accustomed to it and following few instructions strictly:
  • Initially, the dentures always give the feeling of something bulky and awkward in your mouth. Regular use of the dentures eventually gets you accustomed to it.
  • The insertion and the removal of denture is something that will require your constant practice.
  • It is essential to follow the instructions that are given by the dentist. The denture should not cause a problem while placing them. If the denture doesn’t fit properly, visit your dentist rather than biting down or forcing it in, as it can cause the denture to break, bend or crack.
  • The time frame provided by your dentist of when the denture is to be worn and removed should be followed.
  • To get accustomed to it and to understand the parts where it needs adjustment, the dentist will ask you to wear it all day for some time.
  • Once the adjustments are made, your dentist will recommend you to remove the denture before going to sleep and wear them in the morning.
  • In the initial phase of wearing dentures, soft food that is easy chew should be preferred. Extraordinarily sticky or hard food should be avoided for some time.
  • Dentures should improve your speech and if it interferes with achieving that you should consult your dentist. Practicing reading with the dentures helps in getting accustomed to it.
  • A denture should only be cleaned using a denture cleaner and water. Your dentist will provide you with the denture cleaner.
  • It should be cleaned every day and thoroughly using a mild brush.
  • Keeping the denture moist by soaking it in the water at night is essential.

Bangalore Dentist, Dr. Deepak Rudramoorthy, recommends his patients to consult the dentist in case of any discomfort with the denture. The required adjustments and repairs will be done without any hassle.
